Slovakia is a small European country tucked underneath the Czech Republic and Poland and situated above Hungary. The nation’s gambling laws are relatively straightforward to grasp, with all forms of gambling considered legal in the country. While online gaming is legal in Slovakia, the current rules which are in place aren’t exactly refined or dare we say completed. Given that, Slovaks may need a little assistance in understanding where they can and cannot play.
Is Online Gambling Legal in Slovakia?
In Slovakia, all forms of gambling are considered legal, and while that may sound as though players can just pop along to any casino to play, it is not quite as clear cut as that. Officially, the 2005 gambling act makes it legal for any native operator to issued games to players in the country, provided the Ministry of Finances licenses them.
In theory, that regulatory organisation should hand out six different types of licenses for online gambling operators. Those licenses cover lottery, casino, simple bet, gambling machine, internet gambling games and state lottery games. Naturally, a top-notch Slovak online casino would probably need to be in possession of several licences at once. Here’s the kicker: the Slovak gambling authorities have not yet issued any permits save for TIPOS, which is a state-sponsored gaming company.

The only area where licenses have been handed out is for online sportsbooks, and these are open to offshore providers, too. It is not immediately clear whether foreign sites would be permitted to apply for a gambling license for casino games, but since none have been handed out (save for TIPOS sites), our guess is probably not.
Slovak Online Casinos
There is only really one Slovak online casino that players can choose to play at. That is run, as you may have guessed, by TIPOS. They can offer lottery, scratch card, poker, keno and online casino games to players resident in the country.
However, it is worth noting that the only officially licensed Slovak casino is the most ideally placed one for citizens of Slovakia to play at. The site offers gameplay in the Slovak language, and it uses the euro currency. A handful of Slovak banks and friendly payment methods can also be used when playing there.
Of course, this doesn’t really give nationals a lot of choices when it comes to gambling games. As a result, many Slovak players may choose to play at offshore casinos.
Offshore Casino Sites for Slovak Players
As you will no doubt be aware, an offshore casino is any site which offers gameplay services to players in one country, while being licensed (or based) in another. Given that Slovakia only offers up one legitimate casino, this term can practically be used to describe all other online casinos.
Foreign online casinos will still cater to players in the country, and although it is technically illegal for Slovaks to play at those domains, they are free to do so. The government of the country does not punish their nationals for playing at international websites.
There the Ministry of Finances flirted with the idea of hunting down unlicensed operators and fining them, as well as putting in blocks so that Slovak players couldn’t access the major domains. However, fierce criticism from the European Union and ISPs (internet service providers) put paid to this idea. As a result, Slovaks are free to play at offshore casinos as they see fit.
Is Anything Likely to Change in the Future?
It might do. As mentioned, Slovakia already has all the legislation in place to offer gambling licenses, and arguably not just to local operators but international ones, too. However, thus far, they have chosen to be very exclusive about who they hand out licenses to, with the state-sponsored casino (TIPOS) the only recipient.
In the future, it is entirely possible that Slovakia will broaden their horizons and offer licenses to offshore casinos, as many other EU member states do. Given that the regulations are already in place, it would only take a snap of the fingers to make this happen, so watch this space.
Top Slovak Casino Sites
If playing at the state-sanctioned site doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you have ample options open to you. As mentioned, Slovaks are free to play anywhere without consequence.
